Welcome Back to the 2023-2024 school year! Killian Elementary STEAM Leaders Magnet students and teachers are Purpose Driven, Future Ready School Year. This school year ignites a special moment for Killian. Killian was opened in August 1998 and this year is our 25th Anniversary since the doors were opened, serving students in Northeast Columbia. Through the years Killian enrollment has grown tremendously. In 2011 we added four classrooms to expand our building. More recently, due to the 2018 Bond Referedum we had renovations to HVAC System, student restrooms, media center and adding six more classes to alleviate portables on our campus. In addition, the Little Red Schoolhouse is still located on Killian campus.  Relationships in a school setting are so essential.  We inform our students and families of school-wide expectations of “How we conduct ourselves at ALL times.”  As Leaders among Leaders, we will continue to look at school test data and provide SMART Goals for grade levels and school wide goals for our students in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. We will continue to use formative assessments and data to improve instructional strategies for teachers. In addition, preparing students with 21st Century learning to include best practices with technology and increasing student engagement.

Finally, safety is our number one priority at all times. Parents please adhere to all school procedures such as early morning drop-off, signing in students after the tardy bell, signing students out after 2:15 and following car rider procedures, etc.

Continue to be Purpose Driven, Future Ready as we Celebrate 25 year of Academic Success as “Go Full STEAM ahead into the Future”.

Hello Killian family and friends. I am Marlena Council and I am so excited about serving as one of the Assistant Principals at Killian Elementary School. Education has always been my calling.

I began teaching at Joseph Keels Elementary. While at Joseph Keels, I taught third grade for 6 years and served as the Curriculum Coach for 2 years. In my 10th year of education, I was presented with the opportunity to work with a Race to the Top Grant. During this year, I supported schools and district level personnel as an Enterprise Learning Coach. With this position, I was able to guide students, teachers, administrators, and parents to embrace the learning needs of the 21st Century learner.

I am so proud to say that I am a Leading Lion! Here at Killian Elementary School, we embrace the 21st Century learner. Through the many resources, materials, technology, and experiences we strive to provide an innovative curriculum, in a safe, nurturing environment that will prepare students to be productive citizens in a global society, Here at Killian, we realized the tremendous role we play in our students' futures and we do not take it lightly. We are growing leaders everyday and are excited about the opportunity you have given us to serve you and your children!

Hello Killian family! My name is Michelle Evans and I am grateful to serve as one of your Assistant Principals. As Sydney J. Harris states, “The purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. “ I truly believe that it is vital we not only prepare our children for their future but guide them along the way as well.

In preparation for my education journey, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Morris College in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I then earned a Master of Education degree from  Lesley University in Curriculum and Instruction and an Education Specialist degree from Cambridge College in Education Leadership. I completed post graduate studies in leadership at South Carolina State University and received Literacy Coaching endorsement from the South Carolina Department of Education.

I began teaching in Sumter School District at Pocalla Springs Elementary where I taught first grade. I then moved to Conder Arts Integrated Elementary school here in Richland School District Two. I taught at Conder for 7 years. While at Conder, I also taught First Grade, served as team leader, served as a coaching teacher for USofC and participated in several grant initiatives. In 2014, I was afforded the opportunity to be one the initial Reading Coaches following the implementation of the Read to Succeed Act. My assigned school was Joseph Keels Elementary where I served for 8 years. While at Joseph Keels, I completed the Richland Two’s Training Administrator’s Program (TAP) and served as a Teacher Mentor. I am excited to be a Leading Lion and serve as Assistant Principal with the wonderful Killian Elementary family!
